Confirm who is making the agreement
Check the full legal names of the parties and who is signing for a business. A trading name on an advertisement may differ from the entity identified in the contract. Make sure the service, property, or product is described precisely enough to recognize. Collect every attachment and referenced schedule. If a document incorporates online terms, save the version you reviewed and ask how later changes would be handled.
Translate promises into practical tasks
Look for the scope of work, delivery dates, acceptance criteria, and responsibilities on both sides. A promise to provide support, for example, leaves questions about response times and the work included. Identify assumptions about materials, access, permits, or information you must provide. Write down unclear points as questions. If a particular promise influenced your decision, ask for it to be accurately included in the agreement before signing.

Follow the money through the whole arrangement
Separate deposits, progress payments, final payments, recurring charges, and possible extra costs. Match each payment with the event that triggers it. Ask what happens when work is delayed, partly completed, or disputed. Review interest, late charges, and refund language alongside the price. Do not assume that an advertised monthly figure represents the full commitment when the contract also contains a minimum term or automatic renewal.
Read the exit and dispute provisions
Find the notice requirements, cancellation terms, renewal procedure, and method for approving changes. Check for mediation, arbitration, choice-of-law, and court-location provisions. Their effect depends on applicable law and the circumstances, so obtain advice when the consequences are significant. Some agreements must satisfy special formalities. A general belief that any contract can be canceled within a few days is not a reliable substitute for checking the specific transaction.
Keep the signed version and the performance record
Once terms are settled, obtain a complete signed copy and keep later amendments with it. Record important delivery, approval, and payment events. If a dispute develops, compare what was promised with what happened and identify the resulting loss. Not every disappointing outcome is a legally actionable breach. A lawyer can assess enforceability, available remedies, and any required notice before you stop performance or take another consequential step.
